Bioinformatics Analyst/Programmer
- Position #CGB-015
The Center for Genomics and Bioinformatics (CGB) at Indiana University, Bloomington, carries out independent research using genomic tools to solve questions in the related fields of (i) Ecology and Evolution, (ii) Comparative Biology of Arthropods, (iii) Microbial System Biology, and (iv) Environmental Health and Toxicology. The Center has strengths in functional genomics using microarrays, genome-wide studies of DNA polymorphisms, genome sequencing and is exploring new technologies to gain knowledge on how genomes are shaped by environmental change and evolution. Our work is largely interdisciplinary and collaborative; the CGB is home of the Drosophila Genomics Resource Center (DGRC) and is a leading participant in the Daphnia Genomics Consortium, the Indiana Center for Insect Genomics, and the Indiana University Microbial System Biology Initiative and the Consortium for Environmental Genomics and Toxicology. Both Indiana University and the State of Indiana have made the life sciences a priority, and the CGB is an active participant in this effort.
The CGB has recently acquired an Illumina sequencer to partner with its pre-existing Roche Titanium sequencer. These machines generate an abundance of data from a variety of projects, including de novo sequencing, resequencing, transcriptome sequencing, CHiP sequencing, and DNA methylation. We seek a Bioinformatics Staff Scientist (at the level of Research Associate) to handle the data from these platforms, and to develop programs to analyze the data. More specifically, the successful candidate will be expected to execute post-run analyses and quality control; to develop programs for 454 transcription analysis; and to participate in the Daphnia and modENCODE projects.
The ideal candidate will have strong programming skills in PERL, C++ and possibly Java. Understanding of basic biological language would be an asset. Ability to design and develop algorithms would also be highly preferred. We require a Masters degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
The position is open now and applications will be accepted until it is filled. Those received by July 31, 2009, will be assured full consideration. Interested candidates may contact (jobs@cgb.indiana.edu) for further information.
Please submit a CV and a description of your background and interests, and have three (3) letters of recommendation sent to: Bioinformatics Staff Scientist CGB-015, Center for Genomics and Bioinformatics, Indiana University, 1001 E. 3rd St., Bloomington, IN 47405.
